The Villa extended over an area of at least 120 hectares, including residential buildings, baths, nymphaea, pavilions, and gardens. The various structures were connected not only by surface paths but also by an underground network for both carts and pedestrians, serving functional purposes.
The richness of the villa’s architectural and sculptural decoration was extraordinary and has been the subject of intense and systematic research since the Renaissance. Almost all major museums and collections in Rome, across Italy, and throughout Europe include exemplary works originating from Villa Adriana.
